The Battle of The Santa Cruz Islands is but one of several major sea battles for control of the area around Guadalcanal. The Japanese fleet sallies forth to take advantage of their expected land victory in their third and final land offensive on Guadalcanal led by General Maruyama. But, when they hear of the failure of the land offensive, the fleets decides to engage and destroy the American fleet anyway. Four Japanese carriers supported by four battleships sail forth to meet two American carriers and two battleships. The Hornet is lost during the battle. See the Flash animaGtion for more
