Operation Cartwheel

Operation Cartwheel, 1942-1943

New Britain, Bougainville, Rabaul, Admiralty Islands, New Georgia

Once the Japanese onslaught is halted in the many battles for Guadalcanal, Admiral King and General MacArthur devise a plan to slowly strangle the huge Japanese base at Rabaul on the island of New Britain. They devise Operation Cartwheel which will simultaneously move a combined Australian/US force through New Guinea and a US/New Zealand force through the northern Solomon Islands (New Georgia, Bougainville).
